    Lesson 2

    Healing Anger

    Lesson 2

    Learning to Notice

Lesson 1 showed you the truth about anger: it is always a secondary emotion, it devastates your body and mind when it becomes chronic, and no surface-level management technique will resolve it because the real problem is what anger is protecting you from feeling. You also left with immediate tools—the STOP Skill, Negotiated Time-Outs, and Half-Smile and Willing Hands—that create space between trigger and reaction. Those tools will keep you from doing more damage while the deeper work unfolds.

But here is the deeper problem: anger moves fast. By the time you realize you are angry, the anger has already hijacked your nervous system, flooded your body with cortisol and adrenaline, and taken your prefrontal cortex offline. The STOP Skill works—but only if you can catch the anger early enough to use it. And catching it early requires a skill that chronic anger has systematically destroyed: the ability to notice what is happening inside you as it happens.

The Psychological Foundations: Basics course is where that skill is built. It covers eight foundational lessons—from why healing matters, to how emotions function as information rather than noise, to the mechanics of emotional regulation. For someone with anger problems, these skills are essential because anger has trained your nervous system to skip the noticing step entirely: stimulus → explosion, with nothing in between. Learning to notice—to observe the precursors, the body sensations, the micro-emotions that precede the eruption—is what makes everything else in this course possible.

Complete the Basics course, then return here for Lesson 3, where you will apply everything you have learned to begin the crucial process of slowing anger down and separating it from the emotions it is protecting.
