Lesson 3

    Healing Grief & Loss

    Lesson 3

    Building the Foundation

You have already done something important. In Lesson 1, you learned the distinction that changes everything in grief work: pain—the natural ache of what you have lost—and suffering—the guilt, self-blame, and mental loops your mind builds on top of that pain. In Lesson 2, you practiced staying present during grief waves without being swept under. Those are real skills, and they took real courage to develop.

This lesson is a bridge. Before you can begin reducing suffering and processing pain directly—which is exactly what you will do in Lessons 4 and 5—there is a foundation that needs to be in place. You need to be able to notice what your mind is doing while it is doing it. Not after the spiral has already taken over. Not the next day when you look back and wonder what happened. In the moment, while it is unfolding.

That is what the Psychological Foundations: Basics course builds. It teaches you how emotions, thoughts, and body states interact—how they reinforce each other, how patterns form beneath your awareness, and how to catch those patterns early enough to do something about them. This is not abstract knowledge. It is the difference between being carried away by a grief wave and being able to say, in the middle of it, "I can feel the pain, and I can also see the suffering my mind is adding right now."

Without this foundation, suffering and pain feel like one thing—one undifferentiated wall of distress. With it, you start to see the seams. You start to notice where the grief ends and the self-attack begins, where the sadness stops and the catastrophic thinking takes over. That noticing is not the full intervention—but it is the skill that makes every intervention that follows actually work.

Take your time with Basics. It is not a detour from your grief work—it is the ground your grief work stands on. When you are ready, Lesson 4 will be here, and you will arrive with the awareness you need to start separating pain from suffering in practice and begin reducing both.

    Required Course

    Psychological Foundations: Basics

8 lessons · Build the awareness to notice what your mind is doing in real time—the skill that makes everything else possible.

After Basics, you will have the inner awareness to track what is happening inside you while it is happening. Lesson 4 builds on that foundation—teaching you how to reliably tell the difference between pain and suffering in real time, and begin reducing the suffering that has been compounding your grief.
