Strengthening Relationships
Lesson 2
In Lesson 1, you learned something most relationship advice never mentions: the words you say account for only about 7% of what your partner actually receives. The remaining 93%—tone, body language, facial expressions, sighs, pauses—is driven almost entirely by your emotional state, and your emotional state is driven by your subconscious. You can learn every communication technique in the world, but if the emotions underneath are unresolved, your body and tone will betray you every time.
This means that improving a relationship is not primarily a communication problem—it is a self-understanding problem. The single most powerful thing you can do for your relationship is to understand your own psychology: why you react the way you do, what emotions are driving your behavior, what patterns you repeat without realizing it, and what unresolved experiences are silently shaping how you show up with your partner every day.
The Psychological Foundations: Basics course is where that understanding begins. It covers eight foundational lessons—from why healing matters, to how emotions function as information rather than noise, to the mechanics of emotional regulation and the subconscious forces that drive behavior. For someone working on their relationship, these skills are essential because most relationship conflict is not actually about the topic being argued—it's about unprocessed emotions, unmet needs, and automatic reactions that neither partner fully understands.
When you understand yourself—when you can notice your emotions as they arise, distinguish between reactions and responses, and recognize the subconscious patterns that have been running your behavior—you stop being at the mercy of your own reactivity. And when your reactivity decreases, the 93% of your communication that your partner actually responds to changes fundamentally—not because you learned a script, but because you changed the emotional state generating the signal.
Complete the Basics course, then return here for Lesson 3, where you will go deeper into the mechanisms that drive conflict and connection at a level most people never access.
Required Course
8 lessons · Build emotional awareness, understand the subconscious, and learn to read your emotions as information.
Once you have completed the Basics course, you will have the emotional awareness and self-observation skills needed to begin seeing your relationship patterns clearly. In Lesson 3, you will explore the intermediate-level frameworks that reveal what's actually happening beneath the surface of your arguments—including symbolic processing, defense mechanisms, and the difference between content and process that unlocks the ability to see past what a fight is about to what it's actually about.
