1. Allow the grief
You can't integrate what you haven't mourned. Give yourself permission to grieve your pre-disability self, your lost abilities, and your changed future.
2. Find your community
Connect with others who share your experience. Disability community offers mirrors, role models, and belonging that can be transformative.
3. Explore disability perspectives
Challenge the narrative that disability is only tragedy. Learn about disability pride, the social model, and different ways of valuing human diversity.
4. Look for continuity
What core parts of you have survived? Your humor, values, relationships, character? Integration comes from seeing the thread that connects before and after.
5. Allow integration to take time
This is a process that unfolds over months and years. You don't have to have it figured out. You're allowed to be in-between.
