    Applied Relaxation

Applied Relaxation (AR) is a cognitive-behavioral technique developed by Swedish psychologist Lars-Göran Öst in the 1980s. It systematically trains you to recognize early signs of anxiety and quickly achieve a relaxed state—even in stressful situations.

Unlike passive relaxation techniques, Applied Relaxation is designed to be used actively in daily life. The training progresses through stages, each building on the last, until you can relax within 20-30 seconds on cue.

    The Stages of Applied Relaxation

    1. Progressive Relaxation (Weeks 1-2) – Learn to systematically relax all muscle groups (15-20 min)

    2. Release-Only Relaxation (Weeks 3-4) – Relax without tensing first (5-7 min)

    3. Cue-Controlled Relaxation (Weeks 5-6) – Pair relaxation with a cue word like "relax" or "calm" (2-3 min)

    4. Differential Relaxation (Weeks 7-8) – Relax non-essential muscles while doing activities (60-90 sec)

    5. Rapid Relaxation (Weeks 9-10) – Use cues throughout day to relax quickly (20-30 sec)

    6. Application Training (Weeks 11+) – Apply in anxiety-provoking situations

Research shows Applied Relaxation is as effective as CBT for generalized anxiety disorder and panic disorder. The key is consistent daily practice through each stage.

    Benefits

    • Proven effective for anxiety disorders
    • Can be used anywhere, anytime once learned
    • Provides sense of control over anxiety
    • Skills become automatic with practice
    • Addresses anxiety in real-world situations

    Things to Consider

    • This technique requires commitment—expect 10-12 weeks of daily practice for full effectiveness.
    • Don't rush through stages; mastery at each level is essential.
    • Keep a practice log to track progress and identify patterns.
    • Originally developed for anxiety, but useful for any stress management.
    • Professional guidance can be helpful but the technique can be learned independently.

    Speed
    1. 1Week 1-2: Practice progressive muscle relaxation daily (tense-release each muscle group for 15-20 min).
    2. 2Week 3-4: Practice release-only relaxation—scan body and release tension without tensing first (5-7 min).
    3. 3Week 5-6: Add a cue word. Before relaxing, take a breath, think "relax" on exhale, and release tension. Repeat until cue triggers relaxation automatically.
    4. 4Week 7-8: Practice relaxing non-essential muscles during daily activities (sitting, walking, working).
    5. 5Week 9-10: Set reminders to practice rapid relaxation 15-20 times daily—use cue word and relax in 20-30 seconds.
    6. 6Week 11+: Begin applying in mildly anxiety-provoking situations, gradually working up to more challenging ones.
