    Autogenic Training

Autogenic Training is a relaxation technique developed by German psychiatrist Johannes Heinrich Schultz in the 1920s. It uses a series of mental exercises to produce a state of deep relaxation by focusing on specific physical sensations. The word "autogenic" means "self-generated," reflecting how practitioners use their own mental focus to create calm.

The technique works by directing your attention to different body parts while silently repeating phrases that suggest warmth and heaviness. These sensations are associated with relaxation and help activate the parasympathetic nervous system.

    The Six Standard Exercises

    1

Heaviness – "My arms are heavy" (promotes muscle relaxation)

    2

Warmth – "My arms are warm" (promotes vascular dilation)

    3

Calm heart – "My heartbeat is calm and regular"

    4

Calm breathing – "My breathing is calm and regular"

    5

Warm abdomen – "My abdomen is warm" (promotes digestive calm)

    6

Cool forehead – "My forehead is cool" (promotes mental clarity)

Autogenic Training has been studied extensively and shown to help with anxiety, insomnia, stress-related conditions, and chronic pain.
