    Behavioral Rehearsal

Behavioral Rehearsal is a technique where you practice challenging situations before they happen—either through mental imagery, role-play, or actual practice. It's used in therapy to prepare for difficult conversations, social situations, job interviews, or any scenario where you want to perform well.

Just as athletes visualize and practice their performance, you can rehearse interpersonal and emotional challenges. This builds skills, reduces anxiety, and increases confidence by making the unfamiliar feel more familiar.

    Three Types of Rehearsal

    1. Mental Rehearsal (Visualization)

•Close your eyes and imagine the scenario
    •See yourself handling it successfully
•Include sensory details—what you see, hear, feel
•Practice multiple times in your mind

    2. Role-Play with Someone

•Ask a trusted person to play the other party
    •Practice your responses out loud
•Get feedback and try different approaches
•Switch roles to understand their perspective

    3. Graduated Real Practice

    •Practice in lower-stakes situations first
•Build up to the target situation
•Reflect and refine after each practice

    What to Rehearse

    Difficult conversations:

    •Setting boundaries with family
    •Asking for a raise
    •Expressing needs in relationships
    •Giving or receiving criticism

    Social situations:

    •Networking events
    •First dates
    •Public speaking
    •Meeting new people

    Practical scenarios:

    •Job interviews
    •Medical appointments
    •Conflict resolution
•Making phone calls (for phone anxiety)

    Key elements to practice:

    •Your opening line
•How to respond to likely reactions
•What to do if things go wrong
    •How to exit gracefully

    Why rehearsal helps:

•Reduces anxiety by making situations familiar
    •Builds actual skills through practice
    •Reveals gaps in your preparation
•Increases confidence for the real thing
    •Creates "muscle memory" for responses
•Allows you to troubleshoot problems in advance
