    Boundary Mapping

Boundaries are the limits you set to protect your time, energy, emotions, and values. Without clear boundaries, you become resentful, exhausted, and lose yourself in others' expectations. Yet many people struggle to identify what their boundaries even are, let alone communicate them.

This exercise helps you map where your boundaries are strong, where they're weak, and develop specific language to assert them.

    Types of Boundaries

Physical: Personal space, touch, rest needs

Emotional: What feelings you take on, what you share

Time: How you spend your hours, availability

    Mental: Opinions, values, thoughts

    Material: Possessions, money, lending

Digital: Response times, social media, availability

    Sexual: Consent, comfort, intimacy

Energy: How much you give, take on others' problems

    Mapping Your Boundaries

    For each area, ask:

•Where do I feel resentful? (Resentment signals a boundary need)
    •What do I tolerate that I shouldn't?
•Where do I say yes when I want to say no?
    •What would I never accept?
•What do I need to function well?
•Who drains my energy most, and why?
•What patterns keep repeating that I want to stop?
•When do I feel taken advantage of?
•What requests trigger immediate guilt or obligation?
    •Where am I over-responsible for others' feelings?
•What do I do out of fear rather than choice?
•When do I abandon my own needs for someone else's?
•What situations leave me feeling invisible or unimportant?
•Where do I feel controlled or manipulated?
•What am I afraid to ask for?

    Identify your boundary style:

•Porous: Oversharing, difficulty saying no, over-involved in others' problems
•Rigid: Walls up, few close relationships, rarely asks for help
•Healthy: Flexible, clear about values, open but protected

    Create boundary statements:

    •"I need..." / "I don't..." / "I'm not available for..."
    •"I can do X, but not Y"
    •"When you do X, I feel Y. I need Z."
    •"That doesn't work for me."
•"I've decided to..." (no explanation needed)

    Practice scripts for common situations:

•Work: "I can take that on if we reprioritize X."
•Family: "I love you and I'm not discussing that topic."
•Friends: "I can't make it, but I hope you have a great time."
•Partner: "I need some time alone to recharge."

    Signs you need better boundaries:

    •Chronic resentment or burnout
•Saying yes when you want to say no
    •Feeling responsible for others' emotions
    •Difficulty knowing what you want
•People often take advantage of you
•You feel guilty for having needs

    Boundary-setting tips:

•Boundaries are about YOUR behavior, not controlling others
    •You don't need to justify or over-explain
•Start with easier situations to build the skill
•Expect discomfort—it gets easier with practice
•Some people will resist; that's information about them
    •"No" is a complete sentence
