    Calm Safe Place

Calm safe place is where you imagine yourself in an environment that makes you feel calm and safe. This meditation is commonly used in EMDR.

    Benefits

    • Creates a mental refuge for stress relief
    • Easy to use at anytime

    Things to Consider

    • You will be using bilateral stimulation in this exercise. Read more on it here
    • If using a real place, make absolutely sure it has only positive memories attached to it.
    • There are no limits to creativity - your safe place can be as fantastical as you want. If you like the beach or the mountains, create your own ideal version. If you want isolation, you can be on an asteroid, in a bunker in the middle of a mountain, or under the sea.
    • If your environment doesn't feel safe enough, do something to make it feel safer. Create force fields, bodyguards, make yourself a jedi, or whatever else you want. Be creative.
    • You can also have people in your space but they must be a solely positive influence.
    • The more sensory details you add, the more real and effective the experience becomes.

    Speed
    1. 1Imagine a place, real or imagined, that makes you feel calm and safe.
    2. 2Take notice of what is around you. What do you see? If anything you see doesn't make you feel calm or safe, change it.
    3. 3Engage your other senses. What can you smell? What can you hear? What can you feel? What can you taste? Feel as much as possible sensory wise.
    4. 4Rate yourself on a scale of 1-10 of how safe you feel with 1 being not safe at all and 10 being completely safe.
    5. 5If you are not at a 10 in your calm safe place, either change your calm safe place to be more calm and safe as mentioned in the things to consider section or start doing bilateral stimulation. Do bilateral stimulation until you feel completely calm and safe.
    6. 6Use this meditation as necessary, using bilateral stimulation to enhance the positive calm and safe feelings in the moment.
