    Chain Analysis

Chain Analysis is a DBT skill for understanding problem behaviors by examining the complete chain of events that led to them. Rather than seeing a behavior as coming out of nowhere, you trace the links from vulnerability factors through prompting events, thoughts, feelings, and actions—all the way to the consequences.

This detailed analysis reveals intervention points—places where you could have done something different to change the outcome. It transforms "I don't know why I did that" into a clear map of what happened and how to prevent it next time.

    The Links in the Chain

    1. Vulnerability Factors

•What made you more susceptible? (tired, hungry, stressed, sick, lonely)

    2. Prompting Event

•What started the chain? What happened right before?

    3. Links (thoughts, feelings, body sensations, actions)

•Trace each step: "Then I thought... then I felt... then I did..."
    •Be specific and sequential

    4. Problem Behavior

    •The target behavior you're analyzing

    5. Consequences

•Short-term and long-term effects on yourself and others

    Using Chain Analysis

Step 1: Identify the problem behavior

•Be specific: "I yelled at my partner" not "I was mean"

Step 2: Describe the prompting event

•What happened right before the chain started?

    Step 3: List vulnerability factors

•Were you tired? Hungry? Already stressed? Lonely?

    Step 4: Trace each link

•Go slowly—thoughts lead to feelings lead to urges lead to actions
    •Include body sensations

    Step 5: Identify intervention points

•Where could you have done something different?
•What skills could you have used?

    Step 6: Repair and prevention

•What needs repair? How can you prevent this chain next time?

    Why chain analysis works:

    •Reveals patterns you didn't notice
•Shows that behaviors have causes—they're not random
    •Identifies multiple intervention points
    •Reduces shame by increasing understanding
    •Creates a concrete prevention plan
    •Builds self-awareness over time

    Tips for effective analysis:

•Do it soon after the behavior while memory is fresh
•Be honest—this is for your benefit, not judgment
    •Include even "small" links—they matter
•Write it down rather than just thinking through it
•Look for patterns across multiple chains
•Focus on links you can actually change
