    Cost-Benefit Analysis

A cost-benefit analysis extends beyond simple pros and cons by considering both immediate and long-term impacts. This is especially valuable for decisions involving change, where short-term discomfort often leads to long-term gains (or vice versa).

This technique is widely used in therapy for examining behaviors, relationships, and life choices. It helps overcome the human tendency to overweight immediate costs while discounting future benefits.

    The Four-Box Analysis

Draw a 2x2 grid and fill in each quadrant:

    Benefits of Changing (or Doing)

    •Short-term: What immediate gains?
    •Long-term: What future rewards?

    Costs of Changing (or Doing)

    •Short-term: What immediate sacrifices?
    •Long-term: What ongoing costs?

Benefits of NOT Changing (Status Quo)

•Short-term: What comfort do you keep?
    •Long-term: What stability is maintained?

Costs of NOT Changing (Status Quo)

    •Short-term: What opportunities lost now?
    •Long-term: What accumulates over time?

    Example: Starting Therapy

    Benefits of Starting:

    •Short-term: Feel heard, get support
    •Long-term: Better relationships, less anxiety

    Costs of Starting:

    •Short-term: Time, money, emotional discomfort
    •Long-term: Ongoing financial commitment

    Benefits of NOT Starting:

    •Short-term: Avoid discomfort, save money
    •Long-term: No disruption to routine

    Costs of NOT Starting:

    •Short-term: Problems continue
•Long-term: Issues compound, affect more areas

    When to use cost-benefit analysis:

•Considering starting or stopping a behavior
    •Evaluating a major life decision
    •Feeling stuck in ambivalence
    •When emotions are clouding judgment
•To gain clarity on why you resist change

    Key insights to look for:

    •Are you overweighting short-term costs?
•Are long-term costs of inaction significant?
•Which quadrant feels most compelling emotionally?
•What does the analysis reveal about your values?
•Are there ways to reduce the costs while keeping benefits?
