    Grounding Techniques

Grounding techniques are strategies that help you stay connected to the present moment when you're feeling overwhelmed by intense emotions, anxiety, flashbacks, or dissociation. They work by redirecting your focus to your physical senses and immediate environment, interrupting the cycle of distressing thoughts.

These techniques are especially valuable during moments of panic, anxiety attacks, or when trauma responses are triggered. By engaging your senses, you activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps calm the body's stress response.

    5-4-3-2-1 Technique

The most popular grounding exercise uses all five senses:

    5 things you can SEE

•Look around and name 5 things you can see right now

    4 things you can TOUCH

•Notice 4 textures—your clothes, the chair, your skin

    3 things you can HEAR

    •Listen for 3 sounds—traffic, birds, your breath

    2 things you can SMELL

    •Identify 2 scents—coffee, fresh air, your soap

    1 thing you can TASTE

    •Notice 1 taste—your mouth, a drink, gum

    Physical Grounding

    Body-Based Techniques:

    • Plant your feet – Press your feet firmly into the floor, feel the ground supporting you

    • Hold ice or cold water – The intense sensation brings immediate present-moment awareness

    • Progressive muscle tension – Squeeze and release muscle groups from toes to head

    • Focus on your breath – Count breaths: inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4

    • Touch something textured – Run your fingers over fabric, bark, or a stress ball

    • Splash cold water – On your face or wrists for an instant reset

    When to use grounding:

•During panic attacks or anxiety spikes
•When experiencing flashbacks or intrusive thoughts
    •When feeling disconnected or "spacey"
    •Before or after difficult conversations
    •When emotions feel overwhelming
    •To transition between stressful activities

    Tips for effectiveness:

•Practice when calm so techniques become automatic
•Speak descriptions aloud for stronger effect
•Move through senses slowly and deliberately
•Combine physical movement with sensory awareness
•Create a personal grounding kit with meaningful objects
