    IMPROVE the Moment

IMPROVE the Moment is a DBT distress tolerance skill for situations that are painful but can't be immediately changed. Unlike crisis skills for extreme distress, IMPROVE is for ongoing difficult situations—a hard week, a chronic problem, waiting for something to change.

The acronym provides seven different strategies, each offering a way to make the present moment more tolerable. You don't need to use all of them—find the ones that resonate and apply them to your situation.

    The IMPROVE Skill

    I - Imagery

•Imagine a peaceful place, a protective wall, or a better future

    M - Meaning

•Find purpose in the pain; how might this help you grow?

    P - Prayer

•Connect with something greater, ask for strength, meditate

    R - Relaxation

•Ease muscle tension, take slow breaths, use calming techniques

    O - One Thing at a Time

•Focus only on this moment, this breath, this step

    V - Vacation

•Take a brief mental or physical break from the situation

    E - Encouragement

•Talk to yourself like you would a friend; "I can handle this"

    Applying Each Strategy

    Imagery examples:

•Build a wall between you and the pain
•Imagine a future where this is resolved

    Meaning examples:

    •"This is teaching me resilience"
•"My suffering connects me to others who suffer"

    One thing at a time:

•"Right now, I just need to get through this hour"
•Focus only on your immediate next step

    Vacation ideas:

    •5-minute break outside
    •Watch one funny video
•Make a cup of tea mindfully

    Self-encouragement:

    •"I've survived hard things before"
    •"This feeling will pass"
