    Relationship Inventory

A relationship inventory is a structured assessment of the people in your life—how the relationships affect you, whether they're reciprocal, and what attention they need. We often maintain relationships out of habit or obligation without asking whether they truly serve us.

This exercise helps you become intentional about where you invest your relational energy, who deserves more of your time, and where you might need to create distance or boundaries.

    For Each Relationship, Assess:

    Energy:

•Do I feel energized or drained after time with this person?
•How do I feel in the hours/days after we interact?
•Do I look forward to seeing them or dread it?

    Reciprocity:

•Is there mutual giving and receiving?
•Who initiates contact? Who makes plans?
•Do they show up for me when I need them?
    •Is the emotional labor balanced?

    Safety:

•Can I be myself without performing?
•Can I share vulnerably without judgment?
•Do they respect my boundaries when I set them?
•Do I feel safe disagreeing with them?

    Trust:

    •Do they keep confidences?
    •Are they reliable and consistent?
•Do their words match their actions?
•Can I count on them in difficult times?

    Growth:

•Does this relationship help me grow?
•Do we bring out good qualities in each other?
•Do they celebrate my wins or compete with me?
•Can we have hard conversations productively?

    Authenticity:

•Do I hide parts of myself to be accepted?
•Can I express my needs and opinions?
•Do I feel I have to be "on" or perfect around them?

    History vs. Present:

•Am I staying out of loyalty to the past or because it's good now?
•Has this relationship evolved as I've changed?
•Am I holding onto who they used to be vs. who they are now?

    Relationship Categories

Nurture: Relationships that are mutual and life-giving—invest more here

Maintain: Solid relationships that need consistent but not intensive attention

Evaluate: Relationships that feel unclear—observe and reassess

Limit: Relationships that drain you—set boundaries or reduce contact

Release: Relationships that are harmful—consider ending or significant distance

    Signs of an unhealthy relationship:

•You feel worse about yourself after interactions
•The relationship is one-sided (you always give)
    •Your boundaries are regularly ignored
•You hide parts of yourself to be accepted
•You dread contact or feel obligated rather than wanting to connect

    After your inventory:

•Reach out to someone in your "nurture" category
•Plan how to invest less in draining relationships
•Consider what boundaries you need to set
•Notice if certain relationship patterns repeat
•Remember: quality of relationships predicts happiness more than quantity
