    Resource Installation

Resource Installation is a technique from EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy that helps strengthen and anchor positive internal resources. While EMDR is known for processing traumatic memories, Resource Installation focuses on building up positive states that can support healing and daily functioning.

The technique works by identifying a positive resource—such as a feeling of safety, strength, wisdom, or calm—and then using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping) to "install" or strengthen this resource in the nervous system.

    What Are Resources?

Resources are positive qualities, memories, or states that provide support. Examples include:

Internal resources – Courage, wisdom, patience, self-compassion

Relational resources – Feeling loved, supported, connected

Somatic resources – Sense of groundedness, strength, calm in body

Symbolic resources – Protective figures, safe places, spiritual connections

Memory resources – Times when you felt capable, proud, peaceful

    Why Resource Installation Works

The bilateral stimulation used in EMDR appears to enhance the brain's natural information processing. When applied to positive states, it helps:

Strengthen neural pathways associated with the resource

Make the resource more accessible during stress

Build a foundation of stability before processing difficult material

Create felt sense of the resource in the body

    Benefits

    • Builds internal sense of safety and strength
    • Creates accessible positive states for difficult moments
    • Prepares the nervous system for trauma processing
    • Increases access to positive emotions and memories
    • Can be practiced independently once learned

    Things to Consider

    • Start with mildly positive resources before working with more complex ones.
    • If difficult material arises during installation, stop and use grounding techniques.
    • Resources should feel genuinely positive—don't force ones that feel inauthentic.
    • The butterfly hug (crossing arms, alternating shoulder taps) is the easiest self-administered bilateral stimulation.
    • This technique can be practiced independently with the guidance provided here.

    Speed
    1. 1Identify a resource you want to strengthen. This could be a positive quality (courage, calm), a supportive figure, or a memory when you felt resourceful.
    2. 2Bring the resource to mind vividly. If it's a memory, recall the details. If it's a quality, imagine embodying it fully.
    3. 3Notice where you feel this resource in your body. What sensations accompany it? Warmth? Openness? Strength?
    4. 4Give the resource a word or short phrase that captures it (e.g., "safe," "strong," "I can handle this").
    5. 5Begin bilateral stimulation: Alternate tapping your knees, crossing arms to tap shoulders (butterfly hug), or moving eyes side to side.
    6. 6While doing bilateral stimulation, hold the image, body sensation, and word together. Do 6-12 sets of bilateral movements.
    7. 7Pause and notice how the resource feels now. Has it strengthened? Spread in your body?
    8. 8Repeat steps 5-7 several times until the resource feels fully installed and easily accessible.
