    STOP Skill

STOP is a DBT mindfulness skill that creates a pause between stimulus and response. It's designed for those critical moments when you're about to react impulsively—sending an angry text, saying something hurtful, making a regrettable decision.

The skill is simple but powerful: it interrupts automatic reactions and creates space for wise mind to emerge. By the time you complete all four steps, your emotional intensity has typically decreased enough to respond rather than react.

    The STOP Skill

    S - Stop

    •Freeze completely
    •Don't move a muscle
    •Don't say a word
    •Don't send that text
    •Just stop

    T - Take a Step Back

    •Physically step back if possible
•Mentally step back from the situation
    •Take a breath
    •Unhook from the immediate intensity

    O - Observe

•What's happening inside you? (thoughts, feelings, urges)
•What's happening around you? (facts of the situation)
•What is the other person experiencing?

    P - Proceed Mindfully

•What do I want from this situation?
•What choice will I be proud of later?
•What would be effective right now?

    Making STOP Work

    Key principles:

    • The first S is critical – Everything depends on catching yourself before you react

    • Practice in low-stakes moments – Build the habit before you need it in crisis

    • Create physical cues – A bracelet, phone wallpaper, or note that reminds you to STOP

    • Pause is power – Even 10 seconds can change everything

    • "Proceed mindfully" is a choice – Sometimes the wise action is to leave, stay silent, or ask for time

Post-reaction: If you didn't STOP in time, you can still pause before continuing.

    When to use STOP:

•Before sending an angry message or email
    •During arguments that are escalating
•When you feel an urge to say something hurtful
    •Before making an impulsive decision
•When you notice your "emotional temperature" rising
•Any moment you might regret your next action

    Building the habit:

•Set random phone reminders to practice STOP
•Use transitions (entering rooms, starting car) as practice moments
•Debrief after situations where you wish you'd stopped
    •Celebrate catches, even if imperfect
•Remember: the goal is progress, not perfection
