    TIPP Skills

TIPP is a DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) skill designed for crisis moments when emotions are extremely intense—typically 8/10 or higher. These techniques work by directly changing your body's chemistry and physiology, which in turn changes your emotional state.

Unlike cognitive techniques that require clear thinking, TIPP works on a physical level. When you're in extreme distress, your thinking brain is offline—but your body still responds. TIPP takes advantage of this by using physical interventions to rapidly reduce emotional arousal.

    The TIPP Technique

    T - Temperature

•Hold ice cubes or ice pack on face/neck
•Splash very cold water on your face
    •Take a cold shower
•The "dive reflex" activates, slowing heart rate by up to 25%

    I - Intense Exercise

•Run, sprint, do jumping jacks, burpees
•Any intense movement for 10-20 minutes
•Burns off adrenaline and releases endorphins

    P - Paced Breathing

•Slow your breathing to 5-6 breaths per minute
•Exhale longer than you inhale (4 in, 6-8 out)
    •Activates the parasympathetic nervous system

    P - Paired Muscle Relaxation

    •Tense muscle groups while inhaling
•Release and relax while exhaling slowly

    How It Works

    Why TIPP is so effective:

    • Bypasses thinking – Works on a physiological level when you can't think straight

    • Changes chemistry fast – Affects heart rate, stress hormones, and nervous system within minutes

    • The dive reflex – Cold on face triggers ancient survival response that calms the body

    • Burns stress hormones – Intense exercise metabolizes adrenaline and cortisol

    • Activates calm response – Slow breathing shifts from fight-or-flight to rest-and-digest

Use TIPP first to reduce intensity, then use other skills.

    When to use TIPP:

    •Emotions are extremely intense (8-10/10)
•You can't think clearly or use cognitive skills
•During panic attacks or extreme anxiety
•When you have strong urges to act destructively
•Before important conversations when very activated
•Any crisis moment requiring rapid de-escalation

    Tips for effectiveness:

•Keep ice or cold packs readily available
    •Temperature works fastest—start there
•Hold cold to face for at least 30 seconds
•For exercise, intensity matters more than duration
•Practice paced breathing when calm so it's automatic
•Combine multiple TIPP skills for stronger effect
