    Trigger Mapping

Trigger mapping is the process of identifying situations, words, or behaviors that provoke strong emotional reactions—and understanding why. A trigger is anything that activates an intense response disproportionate to the current situation, often connected to past experiences or unmet needs.

By mapping your triggers, you move from reactive to responsive. Instead of being blindsided by emotions, you can anticipate, prepare, and choose how to respond.

    Common Trigger Categories

    Rejection Triggers

    •Being excluded, ignored, or criticized

    Control Triggers

    •Feeling powerless, micromanaged, or uncertain

    Respect Triggers

•Being dismissed, interrupted, or condescended to

    Safety Triggers

    •Conflict, raised voices, or unpredictability

    Fairness Triggers

•Injustice, double standards, or broken promises

    Competence Triggers

•Feeling inadequate, failing, or being compared

    Mapping Your Triggers

    For each trigger, explore:

    •The situation: What specifically happened?
•Your reaction: What did you feel and do?
•The intensity: How strong was it (1-10)?
•The origin: When did you first feel this way?
•The need: What underlying need wasn't met?
•The pattern: Where else does this show up?

What to do with your trigger map:

•Anticipate: Know your triggers before entering situations
•Pause: Create space between trigger and response
•Communicate: Tell trusted people about your triggers
•Heal: Work on underlying wounds with support
•Reframe: Develop new interpretations of triggering situations

    Signs you've been triggered:

•Reaction feels bigger than the situation warrants
•You feel like a younger version of yourself
•Physical symptoms (racing heart, tight chest, heat)
    •Thinking becomes black-and-white
•Urge to fight, flee, freeze, or fawn
