    Wise Mind

Wise Mind is a concept from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) that describes the synthesis of "Emotion Mind" (decisions driven by feelings) and "Reasonable Mind" (decisions driven by logic and facts). Wise Mind is that centered, intuitive place where both are integrated.

When you're in Emotion Mind, feelings drive everything—reactions are impulsive, intense, and often regretted. In Reasonable Mind, you're purely logical but disconnected from values and intuition. Wise Mind honors both: it uses reason while remaining connected to emotional wisdom.

    The Three States of Mind

    Emotion Mind:

    •Feelings are in control
    •Thoughts are "hot" and reactive
    •Facts are distorted or ignored
•"I feel it, so it must be true"

    Reasonable Mind:

    •Logic and facts dominate
    •Emotions are dismissed or ignored
    •Can feel cold or disconnected
    •"Just the facts"

    Wise Mind:

    •Integration of both
    •Honors feelings AND facts
    •Intuitive knowing
•"What does my inner wisdom say?"

    Accessing Wise Mind

    Breathing exercise:

    •Breathe in, asking "Wise..."
    •Breathe out, answering "Mind..."
    •Repeat until you feel centered

    Stone-in-the-lake visualization:

    •Imagine yourself as a lake
•Drop a small stone into the center
•Follow it down to the calm, still bottom
    •This is Wise Mind

    Ask the question:

•Present your dilemma to your inner wisdom
    •Wait patiently for the answer
•It often comes as a quiet knowing, not loud thoughts

    Signs you're in Wise Mind:

    •Feeling centered and calm
•Decisions feel "right" even if difficult
•You can acknowledge emotions without being controlled by them
•Logic is present but not cold
    •A sense of inner knowing
    •Reduced urgency or impulsivity
