    Yoga Nidra

Yoga Nidra, often called "yogic sleep," is a powerful meditation technique that guides you into a state between waking and sleeping. Unlike regular sleep, you remain conscious while your body enters deep relaxation, allowing access to the subconscious mind and profound rest. Research suggests that 45 minutes of Yoga Nidra can be as restorative as 3 hours of regular sleep, making it one of the most efficient relaxation practices available.

During a typical session, you lie down comfortably and follow a guide who leads you through several key stages:

    Practice Stages

1Setting a Sankalpa (intention) — A short, positive personal resolve that plants a seed in your subconscious.
2Body rotation — Systematic awareness moving through different body parts creates deep physical relaxation.
3Breath awareness — Observing the natural breath without controlling it.
4Experiencing opposites — Feeling contrasting sensations like heavy/light or hot/cold helps integrate the nervous system.
5Visualization — Guided imagery takes you deeper into relaxation.
6Gradual return — Slowly reawakening to full consciousness while carrying the benefits with you.

The practice has been shown to reduce stress hormones, decrease anxiety and depression symptoms, improve sleep quality, and enhance memory and learning capacity. What makes Yoga Nidra particularly accessible is that it requires no physical ability—anyone who can lie down can practice it.

It's completely normal to fall asleep during practice, especially when starting out. With regular practice, you'll find yourself staying aware longer while still receiving the restorative benefits. Many free guided recordings are available online, start with shorter 20-minute sessions before progressing to longer practices.
