Maslow arranged human needs in a pyramid, with the most basic at the bottom:
1. Physiological Needs (Base): Air, water, food, shelter, sleep, warmth. Without these, nothing else matters—survival comes first.
2. Safety Needs: Security, stability, freedom from fear. This includes physical safety, financial security, health, and protection from chaos.
3. Love & Belonging: Connection, intimacy, friendship, family, community. The need to love and be loved, to belong somewhere.
4. Esteem Needs: Self-respect, confidence, achievement, recognition. Both how you see yourself and how others see you.
5. Self-Actualization (Peak): Becoming the fullest version of yourself. Growth, creativity, meaning, realizing your potential.
The Key Insight: Lower needs generally must be satisfied before higher needs become motivating. It's hard to pursue your life's purpose when you're worried about rent.
