Psychological Concepts
Rationalization is a defense mechanism where we construct seemingly logical reasons to justify behaviors, decisions, or feelings that actually stem from unconscious motives or that we'd prefer not to acknowledge. We tell ourselves a story that sounds reasonable, but it's not the real reason.
Rationalization helps us maintain self-esteem and avoid uncomfortable truths about ourselves. It's different from lying—in rationalization, we often believe our own explanations. We rationalize when we betray ourselves.

Rationalization protects us from facing uncomfortable truths but keeps us stuck. When we believe our rationalizations, we can't address the real issues driving our behavior.
